A beautiful accent in any room, there are so many ways to style and customize your bar cart. Beyond the basics – bourbon, vodka, gin and some mixers, how do you make it a statement piece? Whether it be an Ikea hack or a designer cart, here are some tips to add character and style to your space.
1. Greenery or Flowers
Add some life to your cart, especially if it’s in a high traffic area in your home. Greenery goes with everything – eucalyptus, magnolia, or even branches from bushes or trees from your yard. I frequently use clippings from our Japanese maple tree. The more texture the better! Add a pop of color with peonies, tulips or large collections of carnations.
2. Vintage Glassware
My Mad Men obsession comes to life with a gold and black Fred Press low ball in hand. I love mixing vintage pieces with modern in any room, so throw in some retro glassware onto your bar cart. My favorites, which can be easily found on Etsy and eBay, are Fred Press and Culver. There are plenty of colors and patterns in high and low balls, coupes, shot glasses, sherry glasses. Also consider ice buckets, pitchers, shakers and condiment caddies.
As with any decor tip, add layers for more interest. Add some mixology or entertaining books to your bar cart and prop up your glassware or greenery. Or try a vintage cigar box – again the more texture and material variation the better. I also love adding trays onto your bar cart to collect similar items – like your vintage glassware display or your bottles.
Decanters are a pretty way to show off your bourbon or whiskey. Choose a classic shape or something with a little flair. We have a vintage collection that we don’t use often, but looks pretty, and then we have one we got from our wedding registry with a “C” etched on the front.
5. Pop of Art
As your friends gather around your bar cart for their next drink, give them a conversation starter. I love a Slim Aarons print or vintage piece. We currently have a print we bought while we were in Germany this spring.
